Welcome to the 2015 Vulcan Lyric Summer Festival

Who are we?

Our Mission: Telling Stories Through Song

Vulcan Lyric was formerly known as the Center City Opera Theater. Since 1999 the Center City Opera Theater had been committed to producing new theatrical work in the best intimate venues in Philadelphia with the best young talent we could find. Yet, in 2014 we did something radical.

We asked. “How can we take this company to new heights and become a successful 21st century theater company?” We explored and reflected, giving this question our full attention for the last year.

We listened. To our donors. To our singers. To our audiences. To average Philadelphia theater-goers.

We changed. We redesigned our company to better deliver our art now and for the future.

But, our mission stays the same. Vulcan Lyric’s heart and core remains the same as it has for the past fifteen years: Telling Stories Through Song.

New Strategic Mission

New Name
Vulcan Lyric represents two strong elements forged together. Vulcan, the Roman God of Forging melded with Lyric, sung words.

New Sound
Vulcan Lyric will produce operatic works as well as musical theater. All our works will tell stories through song. Our patrons tell us they love both. We say, have both.

New Format
Vulcan Lyric will produce theater in a Festival format. We will concentrate our productions over 3 weeks. Our patrons can see all our shows in a weekend. Nothing like this exists in the city until now!

New Season
Vulcan Lyric’s Festival will be held this summer,
July 30 through August 16. We know that the city is looking
for something special in the summer.

Same Core Values

New Works
Vulcan Lyric will remain focused on delivering world and regional premieres. Our work will continue to have cutting edge and provocative themes.

New Artists
Our dedication to developing young artist remains as strong as ever. Vulcan Lyric productions will feature new singers, new directors and designers, as well as the well-known artists.

New Audiences
Vulcan Lyric’s audience will be more diverse than ever. Our productions will satisfy the long time supporters of the opera as well as lovers of musical theatre. When you come to the festival, expect to mingle with an exciting new crowd.
